Independent Candle Studio: About Us
North East Chandlery is an independent candle studio and lifestyle brand based in Aberdeen, Scotland. We design and make handmade aromatherapy candles and natural products for the home, which support a mindful and wellness lifestyle, with a minimal and modern aesthetic. Sustainability is at the core of our ethical ethos, and we strive to use environmentally friendly materials for every aspect of our products and design.
We take our name (chandlery) from the medieval term for a room in the house that was traditionally used for making and storing candles. Here at North East Chandlery, we specialise in making hand poured aromatherapy candles.
North East Chandlery uses only natural and safe ingredients, to gently scent your home and enhance your mood. Our candles can help uplift, relax or revive you with the natural powers of aromatherapy.
Each candle scent is carefully blended and its properties carefully considered with view to supporting the different stresses we experience in day to day life, so you can choose the candle which can best support you and your needs.
Our candles are completely free from synthetic fragrances, harmful toxins and sooty smoke. Where possible we use organic ingredients, and always strive to reduce our carbon footprint by using recycled or reusable materials.
We chose to use soy wax for our candles because it is a natural and sustainable product, which burns cleanly without harming you or the environment. It also burns more slowly meaning you can enjoy your candle for longer. When you are finished with your candle, you can also easily clean out its jar with warm soapy water to reuse or recycle it.
We use only natural fragrances from pure and organic essential oils, sourced from environmentally responsible suppliers. Not only are these fragrances completely natural and free from toxins, their aromas help to enhance your psychological and physical well-being.
Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy that uses the natural oils (essential oils) extracted from flowers and plants to enhance your mood and wellbeing.
Essential oils are known to have medicinal benefits, and can be used in a variety of ways to improve your mental or physical wellbeing. Different oils are known to have different effects on the body, which means equipped with the right knowledge you can choose the oils to suit the desired mood or health benefit. For example, lavender is known to have relaxing properties and can help aid sleep.
One of the main ways essential oils are used in aromatherapy is through their inhalation. The sense of smell is often the most sensitive of our senses, which is why scents can be so evocative.
When you inhale the aroma, the essential oils aromatic molecules travel up the nasal passage and bind with the olfactory receptor cells in the nose. These cells send impulses to the base of the forebrain, which then interprets these impulses as a smell. The brain rapidly processes and responds to the unique aroma and its properties. Additionally, the aroma molecules are inhaled directly from the nasal passage into the lungs, and from here the molecules enter the bloodstream allowing the healing effects of the essential oils set to work.
This combination of physiological and psychological effects allows essential oils to work holistically on the mind, body and spirit, often creating an overall sense of wellbeing.
When you burn your North East Chandlery candle, its aroma is gently released into the room, allowing you to inhale it and start feeling its benefits.
Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin such as when added to a bath or used during a massage. This absorption through the skin allows the oils to enter the bloodstream. Essential oils should be used with caution and normally need to be applied with a carrier oil (such as almond oil) to prevent irritation. There are also many other ways in which essential oils can be used as part of a healthy lifestyle and natural healthcare regime, but this is just an overview of their common applications. You should always seek professional help and advice regarding your health and before using essential oils.
